First outdoor figures photoshoot
Nov 18th, 2007 by valho
So what do a bunch of figures collectors do when they get together for an outing, well bring some figures and do some outdoor shoot, what else XD.
This is actually the first time the few of us, 4 to be exact, got together for an outdoor figures shoot, usually we just go to a “mamak” (sort of like a cafe). The location we choose is KLCC, since we can’t think of any other place with a park. Once we got there we started to look for a nice place with not much people to starting doing our photoshoot. The sun was quite nice on that day and fortunately it didn’t rain.
Hit the jump for more photos and a behind the scene look ^^
Three of use brought a figure each, the forth guy didn’t bring any. So we have Asakura Ryoko, Clalaclan and Kaminagi Ryoko, posing for us ^^. First up is Asakura Ryoko who looks right at home at the park, looks like she taking a leisurely stroll after school.
Coming up next is Clalaclan. First time I am seeing her close-up, pretty nice figure. Good thing she doesn’t really look out of place at the park.
Some pantsu shoots, I wonder what were the people who saw us taking these shots thinking XD.
Finally Kaminagi Ryoko, she looks like she’s taking a stroll at a park after school as well.
Both Ryoko together.
Some behind the scene shots XD.
In the name of quality photos, you need to get down and dirty sometimes. I did it too, but after that I just hold the camera at low angle and shoot without looking at the viewfinder. A bit of trial and error but still possible to get nice pics.
Trying to get Clalaclan pantsu shots XD. Oh I hope they won’t kick my ass for posting this up XD.
Models:
Max Factory 1/8 Asakura Ryoko from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu
Alter 1/8 Kaminagi Ryoko from Zegapain
Kotobukiya 1/8 Clalaclan from Shining Tears X Wind
Photo taken using: Canon EOS 400D with EF-S 17-85IS USM lens

Hehehe looks like you guys had a fantastic time
And it must be so cool to be able to hang out with those of like mind!
Sure is fun to have lotsa sun! ^^ Hated summer when it was here, but now I’m kinda wishing for juuuuust a bit of sun. Lack of light tends to put me into hibernation mode and I just can’t get anything done -_-”
But those outdoor pics are looking great, gonna be doing a lot more outdoor shots from now?
I know the feeling of getting dirty lol, the Kanu photo shoot involved a muddy koi pond area and my pants got a bit muddy lol. Doing outdoor photo shoots are nice, don’t have to worry about lighting as much. Your pictures came out nice, did you have anyone looking at you lol. People look at me when I’m doing outdoor shoots but I don’t really care lol.
Don’t worry, once you done an outdoor shoot once, the rest become easier, and you’ll soon forget about the people looking at you. A lot of the time I’ve done shots without looking through the viewfinder, and you’ll be surprised at some fo the results that you get from them.
Getting down and dirty is a part of the job for outdoor figure shoots. With a digital point and shoot camera, it’s easy, but with an DSLR it’s a little more tricky. So you going to continue with the outdoor figure shoots?
Haha.. Pics up. Guess we (me the owner of Clalaclan) will be doing this more often once we can find a nice spot with golf grass LOL.
The normal grass looks kind of big and uneven, dont you think?
hoho, your pics all came out quite nice ^^
all of mine may need some editing to get the most out of them
guess it was a good idea to bring asakura ryouko instead of others ^^;;
next round, we should find a club of some sort, if possible a golf club, so that we’ll have nice grass, park and pool
nooo! you got your asakura already! I’m actually waiting for a giant order to ship = tonnes of points; before i order her. she’d better be in stock!
clalaclan’s dress is just lovely, and so was your outdoor shoot. planning to do one after my exams. btw, were there a lot of people there during your shoot? those around must have been wondering what’s up with you ^^
@asrafrate~yeah it was pretty cool
@shino~well the sun was hot and we were sweating but it’s was fun XD. that will depends hehe, need to find good place which is not that easy
@adun~yeah we just do out things and dun care about the ppl around us haha. with dslr u really need to lie on the ground, so in the end i just hold it low and point the camera in the right direction and hope for the best XD. we try to organize some more but need to find some nice place to shoot
@e-jump~yeah normal grass not as nice, too uneven
@LilkeV84~hehe edited a bit also but only a few came out slightly dark the rest are as it is. hmm golf club would be nice if we can get in
@rain~it’s not mine, is LilkeV84 ^^. we choose an area where there’s not much ppl, just some walking by once in a while but yeah those that saw us probably wondering what we were doing
Very nice outdoor shots, I have yet to try outdoor myself, need to try sometime ^^;
Saw some of similar pictures posted by e-jump on other forums ^^.
Which one is you valho?
@ron~i am not in the behind the scene pic ^^ coz i was the one taking picture of it. But the guy in grey did take some behind the scene pic with me in it and posted it at lowyat.net forum ^^
Cool, very nice results. Great to meet you all that day.
I was pretty nervous on getting disturbed by some naughty kid or the guards!
Ha finally went out! xD
Nice pictures! Asakura looks great. Can’t wait to receive mine.
Getting dirty is sure part of the job like said Adun. That reminds me when I took pictures of Ayu and Kureha. I even I laid down on the wet ground hehe. The first time is a bit unpleasant, but once your all dirty, it’s kindda fun in fact ^^;
Must be awesome do go otu and take pictures with friends. Need to motive one of mine hehe.
These are really good. Asakura’s hair glows in that light.
@morgenthau~haha me too but luckily no one disturb us ^^
@lu-k~yeah, been meaning to do this for quite sometimes. haha and that Asakura is not even mine, i didn’t buy her XD. We were lucky the grass is not dirty, just slightly wet haha. Yeah at least with frens, u wont be the only one that look weird XD
@super rats~thanks, the lights were pretty good that day
XD
Great photos for the first outdoor shoot~!
Like most others here, after a few photo shoots outdoors you start to develop your own way of doing things.
For me it was to grab at least 1 friend, and just focus on the camera work.
The friend can help with carrying things and what not, but they’ll also provide that extra bit of security should a kid come along and try to bother you with questions.
And if I just focus on the camera and the figure, I tend to get carried away and eventually forget the people…except that one time in Federation Square…so many eyes on me @_@;;
Keep up the good work, I love seeing outdoor shots!
lovely pictures!!! very distracting “eyes” of clalalan but in a very good way… XD
love the natural look of kaminagi ryoko that blends in perfectly with the surroundings… lovely!!
That’s very bold of you, and you even have a buddy who tagged along! Even with my manly 1/6 military figures, I still don’t have the legendary warrior spirit to go forth, bring them outside and do an outdoor shoot.
@aya~thanks, i would prefer to go with friend, at least with a few of us there, we won’t have to worry too much if someone come and bother us ^^. Yeah once u get into the groove the people around doesn’t really bother us anymore, now we just need to find other nice place for outdoor shoot
@soonkiong~thanks, yeah both ryoko are perfect for this shoot
@hangmen~hahah, try to get a few friends to go with you, it helps ^^
Gorgeous pics. I need to get out and do this sometime too.
I absolutely love the shots of Kaminagi and Clalaclan! Brilliant photos, really gives a sense of space and atmosphere. I would never have the the courage to do this! Kudos!
I admire your courage to do this outdoors. I am planning to do something like that as well!
wow… I can’t wait until my Asakura Ryoko figure arrives. I’ve done about one or two attempts at taking photos of figures but they weren’t too successful. At first I used a Fujifilm S7000 camera. It was pretty good before but the graininess became too much. Just last summer I got a Canon Rebel XTi with only the stock lens. The most I’ve done is abuse it for events. I haven’t really done much in terms of taking photographs of figures and I plan on using Asakura Ryoko as my model after it arrives. I have the stock 18-55mm lens and a 50mm f1.8 lens to abuse. Any tips for photographing? Your pictures are really good. Good setting, good lighting, colours seem pretty accurate… though I have to say the depth of field is a little too small if you ask me… Should I take any precautions or steps in order to be successful too?
Very nice pictures
Haha KLCC… haven’t been there at least 6 years ago (Been studying overseas)
I think it is pretty hard to get a nice scene over in Malaysia. Maybe that’s just applicable to state such as my lovely Perak.
Would love to do outdoor pictures too however sadly I don’t have the right people to do it together… =(
Great work with great courage!
Keep it up
Waa! Next time I’ll try to join you all.
@danny~thanks ^^, my first try, good thing it came out quite nice
@kintaro23~thanks, going with friend helps ^^
@White Testament~thanks, go for it, and bringing some friends along is good too
@koko~the 50mm f1.8 would be nice and take better pics than the 18-55, the 17-85 that I am using is not the best for DOF, especially if want to get good bokeh. as for tips, I’ll you can go to http://www.happysoda.com/archives/88 , http://www.mukyaa.com/figurinereview/28/darker-than-black-background
@kirakun~hmmm well we didn’t know where to go for a nice scene too, that’s why we choose klcc coz it’s easy to get there. trying to find other places where we can take nice outdoor pics ^^
@e_g~yeah you should ^^
Fantastic Photos! I love the Ryoko shots. She blends in so well I can almost feel the breeze passing through.
I’d say I’ll need a Xtra large courage boost to do outdoor! The last time I brought my camera out for a normal scenery shoot (yes just scenery of the Singapore River alone & I’m not even carrying a huge bulky SLR with big tripod & many lenses to swap) and already people were starring at me & giving me queer looks. (-.-’) I have zero idea why.
thanks dice, yeah she really in well with the park as background.
Hmmm they stare even if you are just taking scenery, I would have thought that would be a common sight.
Hi there.. didn’t realise you guys are from Malaysia. The whale structure gave it away heh.
This website is very nice. Malaysia Boleh!
@Hexlord~hehe yeah we are malaysian ^^, we’ll be displaying our collection at the coming Comics Fiesta at Times Square so do come and support us
outdoor shoots are so much fun, i’ve only done two so far and both were in my own backyard, but there are no parks are anywhere is amazing scenery around me so i have yet to take my pvc ladies out for a photo shoot. but i’m looking forward to doing it one of these days, i might drive down to the beach with my swimsuit figures ^_^
@Dancing Queen~yeah outdoor shoots are nice, but I don’t do it a lot though, not easy to find a suitable place for it

[...] The reason for this is the common misconception that anime is the same as cartoons and that it is only for children. Anime is not exactly a genre, but an art style, and it is not just for kids. Once one understands the different subgenre and the history behind anime, they understand why it is becoming so popular and why even adults can enjoy it. [...]
